Magellan Partners for Education

MaP is the parent/teacher organization of The Magellan Charter School. Its purpose is to assist in the promotion of excellence in programs, facilities, and atmosphere for education. MaP provides aid and services to the school's educational, social, and financial activities. MaP  meetings are held monthly. Meeting times are published in Strait Talk, a bi-monthly newsletter. All are welcome to attend.

Parents are integral to the success of our school. Not only does parental involvement greatly benefit the actual running of the school, but it also conveys an important message to the students--the well-being of our school and the education of our children is of utmost importance to Magellan parents.

At Magellan, parents volunteer their skills and talents in a variety of ways on a daily basis. For example:

  • volunteering in the classroom through enrichment activities
  • providing supervision during lunch (giving the teachers a brief planning period)
  • planning "teacher appreciation" events
  • purchasing educational resources through fundraising activities
  • organizing community service and cultural arts programs
  • chaperoning field trips
  • maintaining the physical facilities (painting, upkeep, and cleaning)
  • running the copy center
  • performing office duties
  • publishing a bi-monthly school newsletter
  • encouraging community involvement in our school
  • arranging social activities for the students to attend after school
  • assisting with transportation and carpool procedures
Magellan Magic held true for the 3rd annual Mr. C’s Spaghetti Dinner! The beautiful snow started to drift down just as our second seating was getting underway. There are so many people to thank: the 100+ volunteers who helped make the event happen; Co-Chairs Kelly DeFilippis and Candace Blevins for being so incredibly organized that feeding 750 people didn’t seem all that hard; Cheryl Muncie, Phil Bailey and our 8th grade wait staff/singers for superb service & singing; our wonderful speakers (7th graders Brennan, Mitch, Kelly and Abby and 8th graders Sara and Mitchell former Magellan parent Nan Holden for her willingness to continue to be involved as our behind-the-scenes Julia Child; Michael Franken for his piano talent; the Spaghetti Sisters (a newly formed singing group made up of some of our brave MCS Staff) for adding a little spice to our evening; Trish Villareal for her guidance and song writing abilities; and, of course, Mr. C for not only his delicious recipes, but for having the brilliance to mention to the right people that he’d like to have a dinner where we could all get together and enjoy each other’s company. I am sure I’ve missed some folks who should be thanked, but really this event is classic Magellan—everyone pulling together to make things happen. We are truly fortunate!

Apparently we like to eat at Magellan! For the last four years, our Diversity Committee has organized a Soul Food Luncheon for Magellan families to enjoy during Black History Month. Many students told me this was their favorite food day of the year! Thanks to Keith Shannon and Scott Pope for organizing the lunch and to the many parents who came in to help serve on Feb. 5.

There is lots of great information in this month’s Strait Talk that doesn’t revolve around food, so please take the time to read each article. As always, feel free to contact me with any questions or concerns. I hope to see everyone Tuesday, February 23 at 9:00 am for our next MaP meeting and Digital Citizenship presentation.
