Congratulations Mariners!
Both basketball teams did extremely well this season. For the first time ever
in Magellan basketball history, the boys were undefeated in the conference. They
finished the season as both tournament champions and regular season champions. The
Lady Mariners also did
very well, ending up second in the conference.
The third graders' visit to
Torchlight was an eye opening and fun experience. The students
enjoyed a
multiplication game called Circles and Stars with the students at Torchlight. They're hoping
to visit their new friends at Torchlight again.
7th Grade's Coordinate Plane and String Art Project:
The seventh grade is enjoying their opportunity to work with
art in math class. They have been learning about making curves
from straight lines and the real-world situations where
this concept can be applied. Students are completing
both designs on paper and on wood. Please come to
see their art gallery both in the upstairs hallway and Miss
Bowden’s room.
Magellan won
the regional History Bowl again this year, continuing
the three year streak of winning the Regionals. The
state championships
will be held in Raleigh on May 15. Those competing in the History Bowl
are Carson R., who is the captain, Dylan G., Cameron T., Randy C., and
Jacob F. with Mr. Winters as their coach.
The third graders
recently had a coffee house. The students wrote poems and presented
them in front of their parents. They were treated with hot chocolate, coffee,
and other goodies.
The eighth
graders all designed science fair projects and were judged to
decide who will go on to compete in the regional competition.
Five winners, one from each category, will compete in regionals
on February 23rd. Wish them luck!
The sixth
graders are continuing their studies of the Medieval time period.
February 15 was the annual Medieval Day with a
king and queen,
knights, bishops, and peasants. They also had a talent show and acted out plays that they had written. Be sure to ask a sixth grader
about it!
The
Pickle Jar Players recently preformed for the eight graders.
This senior group entertained the students by acting out readings
such as Alexander's Terrible, Horrible, No Good, Very Bad Day
and The Giving Tree. One man in the group is a retired
immunologist, and he came and talked to the eighth grade about
fighting diseases.
The Soul food luncheon was a great success . Many
students, parents and staff supported this
event. What a delicious way to kick
off our Black History month at Magellan. For
information about other events click here.
Check
out the new Heritage Map in the
hallway outside the downstairs multi-purpose
room. This beautiful world map clearly
shows how diverse the heritage of our Magellan
families and staff really is!
Reminder to Parents: To access the locked portion of the Magellan
web site you will need to log in using your child's user name and password.
New
third and fourth graders received their accounts and

school. If you have any questions contact Jeanne Munoz at Magellan.

On Saturday, March 8th, a team of
Magellan students, teachers, and
parents will shave their heads in an
effort to raise money for St.
Baldrick's. This is the world's
largest volunteer-driven fundraising
event for childhood cancer research.
Thousands of volunteers shave their
heads in solidarity with children
with cancer while requesting
donations of support from friends
and family.
Our team is growing in numbers
and we even have a couple of brave
girls this year! The head shaving
will take place at Napper Tandy's
Irish Pub in downtown Raleigh. Our
time is still to be confirmed, but
all are welcome to come and we would
love to have you there to cheer us
on. If you would like to sponsor us
please visit our web page.
The time has come for us to “spring” into
action at The Magellan Charter School! We
are embarking on two major construction
projects this summer and we’re working hard
this spring to get ready. Committees formed
of parents and staff members are in the
process of planning the construction of our
beautiful new stage and playground slated to
be built on the east side of the field and
retention pond. Both of these exciting
projects are expected to be completed by
August, in time for the opening of school.
Have your children mentioned the exciting
new teaching/learning tools being used in
their classes during recent months? We have
been participating in a pilot program using
interactive “Smart Boards” in classrooms
throughout the school. The positive response
from the students and teachers to this
highly engaging technology has been
overwhelming. Therefore, our Board of
Directors has approved the purchase of 8
Smart Boards and 4 Inter-write Pads. These
will be placed in one or more classrooms at
each grade level, providing access to every
student in the building.
