Latest Wave
(Click here to go to the Latest Wave page)
The Latest Wave is, first and foremost, a lab for students to practice news gathering, writing, editing, art, photography, page layout and desktop publishing. Student journalists make the decisions about content, design and typography. They are encouraged to try new things they haven’t done before. They decide how often to publish, and they take responsibility for distribution. Student editors polish their leadership skills. The students learn about freedom of the press and the need to practice the highest standards of ethics and accuracy.
Web Team
(Click here to go to the Web Team page)
The Web Team at Magellan is for students who are
interested in technology and want to “leave their mark”
at Magellan. The Web Team continuously manages and
updates the Magellan website, as well as learning about
how to build and manage a website. Members of the Web
Team can help with the coding, graphics, layout, or administration of the site. Students work with highly skilled professionals such as Hoey Crain (Magellan’s network administrator) and Jeanne Munoz (Instructional Technology Teacher). The only requirements for the class are
creativity and an interest in technology. 7th and 8th graders should contact Mrs. Munoz if interested in joining.

Geography Bee
Students interested in competing in the National Geographic Geography Bee meet during the months of November and December with Mrs. Vestal to prepare. The school-wide bee is usually held before the winter break in December. This competition determines our school representative. Students in grades 4 through 8 are eligible to compete; in fact, two years ago the national winner was a 4th grader! Our winner will go on to the state competition held here in Raleigh in the month of April. The winner of the state bee gets an all-expense paid trip to Washington DC in May to compete in the National Bee! The National Geographic Society, publishers of the famous yellow magazine, sponsors the competition. Our Motto for the Magellan Bee: “SOMEBODY HAS TO WIN…IT MIGHT BE YOU!” For more information contact Mrs. Vestal.

Yearbook Club
Students in the seventh and eighth grade have the opportunity to participate in creating Magellan's yearbook with the yearbook club. Students make decisions about the yearbook's design and layout. The also choose committees to serve on, including photography, sales and promotions, clubs, sports, etc. Parent volunteers serve as committee chairpersons to help guide students through their assignments. The yearbook club usually meets twice a month with advisors Cheryl Muncie and Catherine Lull.
